We study the relation between the space of representation classes of the fundamental group of a Riemann surface and gauge theory on trivalent graphs. We construct a partial gauge fixing in the latter gauge theory. As an application we get a proof of a conjecture of Florentino.

Using a technique based on dimensional descent, we show that Wigner's little group for massless particles, which acts as a generator of gauge transformation for usual Maxwell theory, has an identical role even for topologically massive gauge theories. The examples of B ∧ F theory and Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory are analyzed in details.

We calculate the k = 2 string tension in SU(4) and SU(5) gauge theories in 3+1 dimensions, and compare it to the k = 1 fundamental string tension.
